Team gymnastics is geared towards the athletes who have hopes and dreams of being the best they can be in life and in this sport. We are here to support them in that dream! To make that dream come alive, the gymnast, parents and coaches must function as a TEAM! If we all work together toward common goals, we have a much greater chance of achieving something really significant with our program.
Gymnastics has a structure through USAG that allows for competitive settings through organized meets. We as a competitive gymnastics team are split up and attend different sessions of the event based on level and age groups. We attend four area meets and then move on to state and regional meets upon qualification of the individual athlete. This is a highly competitive and prestigious program.
We measure our success not by how many medals we receive, but by the progress we achieve, by how we portray ourselves and the execution of skills during practice that continues to the competition floor. During all workouts and competitions we strive for excellence. Our goal is to provide the mental and physical discipline needed for competition within a framework of positive reinforcement and encouragement. Learning to be comfortable in a competitive situation and be proud of themselves no matter the objective outcome is a positive experience and adds tremendous value to a child’s development.
Selection For Team
Initial placement can be requested and is also scouted from our recreational programs. We host an annual parent information meeting to become aware of the time and monetary commitment of team. Then a two week trial program leads up to the skills assessment day which is the beginning of the team’s preseason. Initial placement and subsequent advancement from one team level to the next will be determined ONLY by the Asheville Gymnastics team coaching staff. Where possible, objective measures of learning potential will be used. However, subjective predictors such as courage, commitment, desire, ‘coachability’ and integrity are considered even more so. If a child has a desire to learn and can do so with a positive attitude their potential for growth is virtually limitless. An athlete with tremendous skill but a negative outlook, limits themselves to future growth and development. As coaches, we offer the tools to learn how to be hard workers and strong competitors, but only the individual can choose to use them!
